I, like many other moms, have taken a CPR/First Aid class. One hopes to never have to use these lifesaving skills, but alas, I have indeed had to use these skills. And I recommend that all moms (or anyone for that matter) take this class. It could very well save the life of someone you know or possibly a stranger.
Once, when a three year old was choking on a piece of food and her mother was present but was sort of freaking out. I grabbed the child and tipped her upside down sort of over my knee and gave a firm pat on the back as you do for infants and toddlers.
Another time, a neighbor came over after severely cutting her arm open on a window. She had locked herself out of the house and was trying to open the window on the side of the house when the glass broke. The gash was very deep and at least 6" long and to make matters worse she had diabetes. So I used these first aid skills again. First I had her come to the kitchen and sit down so I could look at the wound, then she looked as if she could pass out and felt dizzy so I immediately called 911 and the operator had me get her to lay down right where we were at (in the kitchen) due to possible shock and put a rolled up towel under her head. The ambulance came and and took her to the hospital.
So the moral of this story is.....
CPR and First Aid class is very helpful in emergency situations. And I recommend everyone think about taking this class. Check with your local fire department to see when these classes are offered.
